The specificity of the combat use of the aircraft forms certain requirements for the basic characteristics of aviation artillery weapons. For example, the short time allotted to an aircraft to attack a target requires the presence of aviation artillery weapons with a high rate of fire (3000-9000 rounds per minute for air targets, 1000-3000 rounds per minute for ground targets).
Aircraft artillery weapons on an aircraft are installed at a considerable distance from the shooter, which requires the presence from the remote-control system of aiming aviation artillery weapons at the target and firing. The fire control system should automatically implement rational shooting options.
Despite these features of aviation artillery weapons according to the principles of device and action of automation, samples of aviation artillery weapons do not differ significantly from small-caliber automatic weapons of the Ground Forces and naval forces. This is due to the similarity of the solution of combat missions (the defeat of manpower, lightly armored and unarmored equipment, small-sized targets), and, consequently, the proximity of the tactical and technical requirements of different types of troops to small-caliber artillery weapons.
Advantages of aviation artillery weapons: high efficiency of action for a large range of targets; always ready for action; not subject to interference and all-weather; easy to operate; can be used to solve a number of auxiliary tasks (setting passive radar and infrared interference, setting smoke landmarks).
Therefore, the authors in the article conducted an analysis of the main trends in the development of aviation (helicopter) systems of artillery weapons, an analysis of world experience in determining the rational composition of aviation (helicopter) systems of artillery weapons. The main types and advanced samples of aviation (helicopter) systems of artillery weapons are considered, their basic tactical and technical characteristics, as well as the composition and principles of building modern helicopter systems of artillery weapons are analyzed. The main technical issues related to equipping helicopters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with modern systems of artillery weapons are highlighted.
